An Alternative to Endless Scrolling 🤳🏻

Holy leisure in an age of hollow rest

Reader,

Have you ever sat down to read your Bible and pray, but before you got started, decided to check a few things online first?

"It'll be real quick," you tell yourself. "Just a minute or two, and then I'll attend to more important matters of the heart."

Before you know it, you've been sucked in by a digital riptide that's pulled you away, making it hard to paddle back to shore.

I'm not sure if that's been your experience, but it's been mine (more than once).

This week, I wrote an article for Gospel Centered Discipleship about this common problem and how we can choose holy leisure over the hollow leisure offered online.

At the heart of this struggle is a battle for your attention and affection, and the pursuit of holy leisure reorients your heart to love rightly.

So, where do you go to find rest? Here's an alternative to your endless scrolling and restless thumbs.

grace & peace,

Cara

C.S. Lewis wrote that often the opening expression of friendship is, “What? You too? I thought I was the only one.” Have you ever had that experience? Something that you once thought was unique to you is shared with someone else, and you instantly feel like you’ve found a kindred spirit—someone else who shares your insights, interests, and vision. When a friendship is born, the weight of loneliness lifts, and we share the joy of solidarity with someone else.

I'm officially "vintage!" Reader, It's not always easy to celebrate getting older, especially when you have a big front-number change. But I'm more overwhelmed with God's grace for the last half-century than I'm upset or sad about aging. In this week's post, I look back on some of the lessons and themes the Lord's been weaving through my life. I hope that no matter what decade or season of life you're in, you'll recognize some similar patterns of God's patient dealings with you through my...

What you think about this changes everything Reader, We hear (and talk) a lot about the importance of mindset these days. Often, we're encouraged to think or speak in a certain way to produce a desired outcome. The life we want, we're told, is on the other side of changing our minds about it. "Be more positive. Think good thoughts. Don't be so negative." It's true that what we think influences how we behave. But what if, instead of being frustrated with the outcome of our thoughts, we became...
